The Final Frontier – How to Find Your Writing Space

Your writing space: the final frontier. These are the voyages of the ultimate writer. Your continuing mission to explore strange new words, to seek out new characters and new plot lines, to boldly go where no writer has gone before!

Yes, you know where I’m talking about-that final frontier you have avoided all day. Your story, or that great idea you have for a book. When was the last time you went there? How many weeks ago? Do you even know how to get there? As the “Starship” commander of your own writing destiny, it is your mission to save the lives of those characters, inform those greatly in need of your expertise, and get your great ideas onto paper. Those great story lines and expert opinions you have running around in your head are trapped on the planet “In-Your-Head” until you put that writing “ship” in gear. And that planet is light-years away from would-be agents, editors, and readers.

So, how do we get that ship started? I once read a quote from Tim LaHaye, the famed co-writer of the Left Behind series, that said, “The only way to write a book is with seat in chair.” Even Captain Kirk had a chair! So where’s your chair?

1. The Chair - It begins with a chair. Where is that chair found? You need to establish where your writing space is located. It should be a room of limited distractions. Beware of rooms with TV’s, video games, or other mind-numbing devices (Klingons). Rooms with doors that close are helpful if life partners, housemates, or mini reproduced humans exist. Finding that chair in a coffee shop establishment is fine provided you are not easily bothered by crowd noises or shelves of books or magazines.

Now that you have found your assigned seat on the deck of your writing “Enterprise,” look around you. Captain Kirk’s bridge was specifically designed for the overall mission. Each piece of equipment, every screen, every surface had a purpose and function. As the captain sat in his chair, you could see his deck encompassed everything the Enterprise was destined to be.

2. The Bridge – This is your environment. What surrounds you? What is within reach of your hand? Just as the Enterprise was set up to meet every need of the captain, is your writing “Enterprise” set up to meet your every need? Is your desk or table surface cluttered? Captain Kirk never had to push aside bills, stacks of papers, stray pens, or pencils to complete his mission. What do you have to push aside to complete yours? Have in reach everything you need and nothing you don’t.

(Side note: Use your control panels for their intended purpose only! Distant galaxies were not discovered via web surfing expeditions.)

And now it’s time to begin your journey. Now that you are seated in your chair distraction free, it’s time to engage the engines. The good news, your writing “enterprise” is actually much easier to activate than you think!

3. The Button – It really is that simple as pushing a button, just as the Enterprise was started with a single button and a joystick, so does your writing expedition. Open your current file or favorite word processing program, place fingers on key board and begin typing. Honest. Captain Kirk didn’t have to think about where he was going-it was already programmed into the systems, just as your next point, or that fabulous plot line is already in your head. It might take a few minutes to get your mind and keys on the same page, but don’t pause. Just begin and see where those words take you.

(Side note: turn off the “spell check” on your word processing program and write without fear of errors. Write first-edit later!)

And finally, as you begin your journey as the captain of your own writing “enterprise,” the leader of the ultimate writing “expedition,” as you travel into the unknown worlds of your amazing writing talents, make sure you surround yourself with the best from the Academy!

4. The Crew – Captain Kirk did not man the ship alone. Mr. Spock, Bones, Scotty, Sulu, Chekov were all high ranking lieutenants, chosen specifically to assist Captain Kirk. Who have you chosen to assist you? Get involved in writing groups, hang out with other writers, and seek those out who will encourage you and your talent. Beware of those wearing the same “uniform” but who have no purpose on your ship. Is there someone aboard who is sucking the life out of you? If they are not encouraging your talents, it’s time to beam them off into space! Choose your crew wisely and keep them close when needed.

Your writing space, your final frontier, this is your voyage-the voyage of ultimate writer-you! It is up to you to continue your mission, to explore strange new words, to seek out new characters and new plot lines, to boldly go where no writer has gone before! Begin your journey today, right now. Write now!

Eureka Moments

archimedes_424Many people have experienced what they might call a light bulb moment where you get a whole idea in less than a second – perhaps for a new product or an idea for a best selling book.

You may not be aware that there is not only an art but also a science to having such eureka moments.

Somewhat ironically Edison apocryphally tried 10,000 or so materials before he came across the ideal filament for light bulbs. He could have saved himself loads of time had he had a real light bulb moment and just think of what else he could have invented.

Imagine then how your business could benefit from you having that amazing light bulb moment to carry you through recession and how instilling a culture of creativity and inspiration would boost staff morale.

Now I’ve been fortunate to have had light bulb moments all my life and recently have been researching where such inspirations comes from and how to have them virtually on demand.

What I have found is that light bulb moments, and the commensurate increase in creativity, come from getting into one of two modes known as Whole Brain and Whole Mind Thinking. The latter being more powerful and needing a little more practice and discipline than the first.

Whole Brain Thinking is where the two hemispheres of the brain work in harmony. Often the left logical hemisphere suppresses creativity by saying things like, “You don’t have time” or “Don’t be stupid, people will laugh at your idea”. It is just acting to protect you as it would from a predator.

The easiest and best way to synchronise the hemispheres is to practice regular meditation. From a personal perspective, the benefits are immense to your mind and body and there are even iPod-like meditation machines available now if you want to experience deep meditative states.

In a business context however this could be frowned upon so there are more acceptable techniques. By far the best way is to use mind maps. The map seems to give the logical left brain something to keep it happy. It likes structure and you can imagine it saying, “A map, now that’s something I can work with.”

While the left brain is busy, the right can get to work and do its creative stuff. Remember that the “brain” of a business might comprise of more than one person and be a collective. So, for example, the left brained technical team can busy themselves on the map and structure while right brained marketeers unleash the ideas trapped inside them.

  mindMapping

Whole Mind Thinking is a mode where the synchronised left and right frontal lobes of the conscious mind fuse with the unconscious mind and then can access what is known as the collective consciousness. It is postulated that the collective consciousness is where all ideas past, present and future reside.

To access this mode, you first need to address any embedded fears or patterns that might be holding you back that are residing in the unconscious mind.  These can manifest in many ways such as in creating writers’ block or self-destructive patterns of procrastination or fear.

Once the conscious and unconscious minds work in harmony, the path is clear for inspiration to flow.

Author’s Block

And why it’s different from writer’s block

When you get asked the same thing three times in the same month, you know it’s time to blog about it.

Last month, three different authors came to me with the same tale of woe. Either a publisher had not delivered what they said they would or had let them down on a previous promise.

Over the last few years, I’ve learned the publishing industry is no different from any other – it has its stars, its stalwarts, its pretenders and wannabes and even its cowboys.

All three authors had completed manuscripts which were all well worthy of being published. So writer’s block wasn’t the problem, they were suffering from something equally insidious – Author’s Block.

The only reason I spotted this was I’ve had it too and only just cured it a few months ago. Since then, my world [and that of my clients] has opened up to a load of new possibilities.

The issue isn’t with the publisher. All they are doing is unconsciously picking up self-doubt in the author. This could be either an unconscious fear of success, a fear of the unknown or a fear of failure or ridicule.

Fortunately, the cure is simple and it’s to take action and actions which lead to new levels of self-belief and motivation. When you take such action, you move a step closer to success and signal your intent that you are ready to become a successful published author.

Here’s the seven things I told each author to do:

1. I told them to buy a copy of my new book Blocks and listen to the Becoming Fear-less MP3 visualisation – it’s transformational – you can do that here – and for good measure, to get a copy of The Wealthy Author

The last chapter of Blocks tells all you need to know about Author’s Block and the others will be jolly useful too.

2. Ask yourself where else in your life this pattern of being let down by third parties you have no control over occurs. Ask yourself what is the common theme and learning to be had from tackling this pattern? Think about how your life would change beyond all recognition.

3. Upload your book to one of the many free ebook aggregator sites like Smashwords

Myebook

Freado

- let people read the first 3 chapters for free. Contact me if you need help technically.

4. Get a Twitter account and read this blog – Useful links for authors on Twitter

5. Buy a new and relevant domain name and start a blog – this is the central pillar of your Author Platform.

6. Get an email account using this new domain name so as to look more serious and professional about your author brand (i.e. no @gmail or @aol)

7. As they were all fiction authors, I told them to submit their work to Harper Collin’s Authonomy or MacMillan New Writing & then to tell all their friends to read it, review it and Tweet from the high hills about it.

Writer’s Block and Karma

Shortly after my first book was published, I started mentoring other authors. The initial attraction was my approach to simultaneously publish on many platforms – ebook, audiobook and print for example.

After getting over the initial shock of the numbers of people who emerged from apparently nowhere to work with me, I started noticing a common theme and trend emerging. This was because ever since reading the Celestine Prophecy, I had been noticing coincidences more and more and paying attention to meta-correlations between groups of coincidences.

Two phenomena seemed to be happening as my clients started to write.

Firstly, they would start to see, and manifest, crystal clear examples of what they were writing about in their lives. It was almost like the Universe spotted what they were writing and presented examples to them to help.

Secondly, they would hit blocks in their lives that would stop them writing completely. Those blocks also seem to be mirrored in what the author was actually writing.

~ ~ ~ ~

The explanation of the first phenomenon is relatively simple. If you can call anything that explains the workings of the human mind as simple, that is.

There is increasing credence for a model of the brain as a holographic transducer which is both the creator and perceiver of the world around it. In this model, the brain is a great pattern recognition system and when it is focused on writing, anything remotely similar will ring a holographic ‘alarm bell’ in its neurology.

Of course, it’s not so much the Universe creating these examples but either the writer noticing ‘stuff’ or creating ‘real life’ examples to help them in their writing.

For more information on this, I suggest you read Michael Talbot’s excellent book, The Holographic Universe.

The second phenomenon presents more of an issue and tackling it has a collateral benefit which exceeded my client’s, and my, initial expectations.

It transpired that the very subjects the writer had chosen to explore were designed so that they could expose and deal with issues of karma.

In essence, karma is not about retribution and balance between good and evil. Like many esoteric concepts, it doesn’t exist but merely acts as a model by which we can understand and expose more about being a spirit in a human body.

Karma essentially ‘a wrapper’ containing information about what a particular incarnation is about.

So what we found was that in every case of writer’s block, it was mirrored by a corresponding and similar blockage somewhere else in their life.

So, to deal with writer’s block, the process was always the same. Identify what the block was, find out where it first manifested itself and release it. This sometimes involved going back into the womb and even into previous lives.

Some amazing learnings were also gained by going back to the “Akashic Records Office“, allegedly where we discuss our life purpose with our soul group – amongst other things. Here we found that the book they were writing, often their first, was full of elements that the writer was destined to learn in this incarnation.

This is what inspired me to record the Journey to the Akashic Records Office as an MP3 in my visualisation series.

The book was their life and their life the book and the writing of the book itself was an essential part of the writer’s evolution, not just an exercise in vanity publishing.

Unsurprisingly the book was all part of the same hologram – and perhaps that’s why those specific clients found me at that particular time.
